English Hub workshops

Over the course of this year, we will be running a series of workshops, and conferences looking at different aspects of early reading which will be open to  schools engaged with the English Hub to attend and completely free including:
  • closing the word gap and developing vocabulary
  • supporting EAL children with phonics
  • teaching phonics in small schools and mixed age classes
  • developing a reading school and a love of reading
  • lesson study observations of guided and whole class reading
  • an OU/UKLA Teachers Reading Group to support Reading for Pleasure
The first of these events took place on November 5th 2019 when we welcomed the inspirational Jean Gross who spoke about closing the word gap. Jean‘s career in education as a teacher, an educational psychologist, author and an adviser to government is all about children who, one way or another, don’t have much going for them in their lives. Her best selling book. Time to Talk, now in its second edition, reflects the many examples of good practice she saw in her recent role as Communication Champion for children. The half day session will covered:
  • What we mean by closing the word gap, the national policy context, the links between spoken language and attainment, and how to create communicative-supportive classroom and school environments
  • Practical strategies for developing language and communication, explicitly teaching vocabulary, a little extra for some children

We have also run "Word Hoarders", a one and a half day programme to support schools in improving the teaching of vocabulary facilitated by Nicola Bloom. We will soon be opening a second cohort to run in Wiltshire.
